Overview of this training activity
This card activity is based on the premise that self-awareness through the process of self disclosure and feedback from others is a key vehicle to personal development. Also, the sooner the trainer can create an open and communicative environment on a learning event then the better it is for all the participants.
Attributes is a multi functional exercise designed to enrich course introductions and to encourage personal awareness and encourage feedback. Also this activity can be used during a course to facilitate discussions and explore the attributes or characteristics required for the given topic from Leadership to Performance Management
Learning Outcomes from this training activity
The Attribute cards can help delegates address the issues of:
- how others see us compared to how we see ourselves
- how some of our personal traits can both help and hinder our application and understanding of the skills the course is addressing
- how to give and receive feedback in a constructive and unthreatening way.
How this training activity works
The facilitators guide details three main uses for this activity and provides handouts, delegate workbooks and debrief questions for each area:
1. Basic course introduction and ice breaker. Delegates can either attempt to acquire attributes that most accurately describe themselves or consider how traits can both help and hinder in their application of the skills the course is addressing.
2. Giving and receiving feedback. When using Attributes for giving and receiving feedback it can work well as a supporting activity for the feedback elements of the JOHARI Window.
3. To stimulate discussion as an energiser. Use Attributes at any point within a training workshop as an energiser and to stimulate discussion around the training topic. It involves the delegates getting up and moving about, followed by discussion and them coming to a consensus.
