This physical and demanding exercise illustrates the difference between managing and leading and the need to switch back and forth between the two roles if you are to get the best out of a team where high performance is essential.
-
This exercise also highlights the critical elements of performance management and team motivation.
On conclusion to this exercise the teams feed back their perception of their manager leaders dominant style during the exercise and establish through discussion and short tutorials the core functions and tasks of management
Session (3) Understanding Leadership Styles
This session starts by introducing Relationship Awareness Theory ®. Delegates then complete the SDI ® which is an easy to understand and very accurate behavioural awareness questionnaire. It quickly gives delegates a common language with which to explore and understand, in a non threatening manner, the different leadership styles and preferences people adopt.
There are seven Motivational Values Systems ™ in total which are presented in the following way to illustrate leadership styles:
Blue (Altruistic-Nurturing) is a Supportive style of leadership
Red (Assertive-Directing) is a Directive style of leadership
Green (Analytic-Autonomizing) is a Procedural style of leadership
Hub (Flexible-Cohering) is a Consensus-based style of leadership
Red-Blue (Assertive-Nurturing) is a Coaching or Mentoring style of leadership
Red-Green (Judicious-Competing) is a Strategic style of leadership
Blue-Green (Captious-Supporting) is an Empowering style of leadership
After learning the theory and discovering the various styles, participants have the opportunity to discover their personal style and strengths. They also learn about their potential blind spots and overdone strengths and use the non threatening language SDI provides to debrief on the earlier Planks activity.
Participants have the opportunity to then produce an action plan of aspects of their leadership style they would like to do more and less of and list behaviours they need to borrow to be more effective.
Day (2)
Session (4) The Power of Leadership ™ An experience in leadership
Delegates are then provided with an opportunity to put theory and discovery into practice in the leadership simulation - The Power of Leadership ™. The Power of Leadership is an experiential business simulation game that helps participants understand the challenges they face when they are given power to accomplish a task. It presents many challenges that, if met with a dominant, one dimensional leadership style, will create disastrous results for individuals in the organisation.
This management simulation teaches leaders how to use various styles to resolve conflicts, communicate effectively, solve problems, and manage positive change in the corporate culture. It helps participants understand why the decisions, behaviour, and attitudes of leaders are often misperceived by their followers.
Session (5) Debrief and Action Planning
Delegates will complete a debrief document which will allow them to review their own and others behaviours and relating style during the simulation. They will discuss what was effective and ineffective, easy and difficult and what they need to do going forward to be a more effective manager and leader.
