Training Activity Overview
A card based exercise designed to improve group problem solving and cooperation. It is especially relevant to the examination of leadership styles. Cards are distributed around the group. Each has a unique identity and either a simple calculation or an instruction to combine in some manner the value of other cards. Between them, the cards provide the information needed to find the value of T. The exercise is designed for groups of 6-12 members and comes complete with enough cards for two groups. It needs between 45 and 90 minutes including discussion time
Learning Outcomes
This short and demanding exercise confronts the skills of teamworking, leadership, problem solving and co-operation. It can be used either as a problem for an entire group without an appointed leader, or as a task given to a leader to test his/her ability to cope with responsibility. Using The Value of T, team members learn to understand the co-operative process, work more effectively in groups and reach advanced solutions to problems.

How it works
The facilitator divides a pack of 43 cards among group members. Each card bears an identity number along with a simple sum (such as 50 + 50) or an instruction to link it, in some manner, to the other cards. Between them, the cards provide the data needed for discovering the value of T. A successful solution requires the group to develop a common understanding of the task, agree on a single method of tackling it and ensure that each member accurately performs his/her own part of the exercise.
